The Human Heart and its Function

The heart is a muscular organ whose task is to pump blood to the body. It is composed of two chambers which are separated by a wall (septum), and each chamber comprises of a single ventricle and atrium. A healthy heart is consistent in its function, i.e. the heart muscle tissue expands and contracts in a regular way.

Measuring the Heart's Activity, or ECG

ECG, or electrocardiogram, is a graphic recording of the heart's electrical biopotentials. It shows the electrical impulses generated by the heart, that cause contraction of the heart muscle. Thus, ECG gives a detailed record of the heart's activity.

Arrythmia

Arrhythmia is a disorder of the heart rhythm, i.e. the heart beats irregularly faster or slower. More serious arrhythmias can cause disruptions in the supply of blood to the body.

Arrythmia may be the result of high blood pressure, congenital heart defects, inflammation of the heart muscle, heart failure, heart valve defects, coronary heart disease, advanced heart hypertrophy, fevers, hidden infections, hyperactive thyroid, hormonal disorders or a disruption in the balance of minerals in the body.

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)

Atrial fibrillation is a disorder of the heart rhythm that increases the chances of stroke fivefold. In this condition the atria contract chaotically causing an accelerated and irregular heart rhythm. One of the consequences is blood clotting and / or retention, which may cause a stroke.
